The first prototype of Solar Islands is currently under construction in Ras al Khaimah in the UAE. This island consists of a circular platform, measuring 80 meter in diameter, on which the innovative low cost EFCs are disposed to transform the energy from the sun into steam, electricity, cold and hydrogen. This prototype is implemented on land, more precisely on a water ring on which the platform floats like an air cushion.
This layout particularity and ingenuity allows the island to rotate in order to align the EFCs to the sun for maximizing its energy output efficiency. The generated peak power will amount to approximately 0.5 MW, and a heat storage facility will provide the means for a constant 24 hour per day output of about 100 kW. The estimated annual production is expected to reach 1.2 GWh.
This ongoing project strongly involves the expertise and tight collaboration between Nolaris and CSEM team since our respective activities are complementary.
